How can I help?
When Aster disappeared she was recognized by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience, defined as someone who has been detained for the peaceful expression of his/her views. In Aster's case, the only views she expressed were the desire to use her education to benefit her country and to be with her children; therefore it is assumed that she is being detained for the views of her husband. She is being held incommunicado, in an undisclosed place, without charge.
Knowing that Aster is at risk of ill-treatment and torture and that she has not seen her children since 2000, we, as her personal friends, have struggled to cope with our fear for her and our feelings of frustration. We needed a creative outlet in addition to our human rights activities. With POW bracelets from the Vietnam era in mind, one of our members designed a prisoner of conscience bracelet made with a variety of precious beads, Aster's name and other sterling silver ornamentation. Soon we were all wearing the bracelets and getting requests from friends. The POC bracelet is our way of honoring Aster Yohannes, daughter, mother, sister, friend. We invite you to join us. Keep Aster in your heart by wearing her POC bracelet and use the opportunity to share her story when others admire it.
Become a Friend of AsterAs each bracelet is different, please let us choose one for you. We include 10 contact cards with Aster's picture and the Friends of Aster website address.
